Description
The New York City Fire Department code 505 requiring specific signage and markings for dwelling units such as apartments and guest rooms in R-1 & R-2 Occupancy Groups, which include; Apartment houses, Condominiums, Boarding Houses, Dormitories, Hotels & Motels.
The placement of these signs and markings serve to aid emergency response personnel in locating dwelling units when responding to fire and other emergencies.
All units are required to have a sign identifying the unit number and or letter, at the door jamb on the hinged side of the door. These markings shall be displayed vertically, arranged sequentially from top to bottom at a maximum height of 12 inches above the floor. The markings must be made of photoluminescent or retroreflective materials. Buildings that are protected by a sprinkler system or less than 8 units per floor do not need to comply.
